2019 Safety Town information
Incoming 5-year old Kindergarteners, sign up for Safety Town 2019, which will be held at Dixon Elementary School, 2400 Pilgrim Square Drive. There will be 3 week long sessions held June 17-21, June 24-28 or July 8-12.
The Safety Town Program was started in Cleveland, Ohio, at the National Safety Town Center, by its Founder and President, Dorothy Chlad, who felt that it was important to have a program dedicated solely to promoting preschool – early childhood safety education. The City of Brookfield Safety Town is a nationally affiliated early childhood safety education program designed to teach all types of safety situations to the five-year-old children. The first City of Brookfield Safety Town Program was sponsored by the Brookfield Junior Woman’s Club and was held in June 1986, at the former Elmbrook School Administration Office, at 16945 W. North Avenue. The program is now located at Dixon Elementary School, 2400 Pilgrim Square Drive. Over 4,000 children have been trained in the City of Brookfield Safety Town Program by certified teachers and by members of the City of Brookfield Police and Fire Departments. Trained teenage volunteers have also assisted the children in learning their safety lessons.
Safety Town emphasizes traffic, fire, and personal safety. It is a prevention program that teaches young children how to prevent accidents from occurring and how to respond to dangerous situations. Lessons are taught in the classroom, on field trips and on the Safety Town miniature layout that includes buildings, roads, signs, and tricycles.
The summer of 2018 marks the 33rd year that the City of Brookfield Safety Town Program has been made available to the children of our community. The Brookfield Task Force on Public Safety Education, Inc. will sponsor 3 one-week sessions of Safety Town this summer:
